Following a Council decision to grant a 50 year lease, Holywell Mead pool, the outdoor swimming pool on

Wycombe Rye could reopen as soon as June 2011.

Many local people have expressed

excitement at the prospect of a revamped swimming pool and fitness centre located conveniently in the town centre, and a level walk from local bus stops.

The Holywell Mead pool closed in 2009 as part of a

cost cutting scheme – but it sparked a passionate campaign to keep the pool

open, with many local people leading their support to the cause.

After 2 years of deliberation a deal

has now been struck with Fusion Lifestyle. This company has has looked at

the possibility of reopening just pools between June and August 2011, dependant

on planning permission approval.

The total refurbishment however, to

include a new health and fitness centre would not be completed until 2012.

Fusion Lifestyle, a registered

charity which runs 48 community sports and leisure centres, including for nine

councils. The plans include the Rye car park and adjacent tennis courts.

Leading campaigner Neil Bailey has

been praised for his part in this wonderful result, which showed how public

opinion can win through. Neil, of The Holywell Mead Pool group said that

campaigners were “delighted” with Fusion taking over and pledged to help

support it and raise funds for any “additional facilities”.

Another leading campaigner Paula Lee,

of Wycombe Marsh, said: “It's absolutely fantastic news for us, we spent a long

time campaigning for it to re-open.”

Lots of local people have happy

memories of swimming at the Rye in 1970’s and 80’s. It’s these folks that now

have kids of their own that look set to benefit the most from the improved

leisure facilities. There has been talk about café facilities also, which will

please those that cannot be convinced to take a dip while at the pool with

friends or family.
