South Bucks District Council recognises that Valentine's Day can be a trigger for domestic violence and have posted the following article including details of helpline's on their website. If you live in Beaconsfield and are suffering at the hands of an abuser please seriously consider getting help via the contact details also provided here.

For most people Valentine's Day is the most romantic date on the calendar. However for some, February 14th can bring another day of fear and abuse when 'love' turns into unreasonable jealousy and possessiveness turns to violence, power and control.

The term 'domestic violence' is most strongly associated with heterosexual relationships and assumes certain gendered roles (male abuses a female victim) however anyone can be a victim of domestic abuse including those in same-sex relationships.

This Valentine's Day South Bucks District Council is sending out a strong message to all victims of domestic violence including those suffering abuse in lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender relationships, that they are not alone and that support and help is available.

South Bucks District Councillor Anita Cranmer, Portfolio Holder for Community, says, "Many incidents of domestic abuse go unreported, with victims too scared to seek help or support, or unaware of where to turn or what support services are available.. Figures show that victims only contact the police after an average of 35 assaults. They also show that 1 in 4 of those in gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender relationships suffer similar abuse. We all need to work together to raise awareness of this devastating crime."

She adds, "Sadly, domestic violence in many communities remains invisible and people continue to associate it with something that only happens to women by their male partners."
